Apiary inspections offered as part of the National Honey Bee Health Survey.
MN Dept. of Agriculture is again participating in the National Honey Bee Health Survey. We are looking for beekeepers who are interested in having one of their apiary sites sampled. The protocol calls for sampling apiaries with 10 or more colonies in a location. Sampled apiaries will be spread across the state to give an overview of the disease and pest status of honey bee colonies in MN. We collect two samples of bees one live and one in alcohol along with a frame debris sample. Brood diseases and the general condition of the sampled hives are noted. All samples are sent to USDA for analysis and the results are sent directly to the beekeeper. Sampling will be done in May and June to finish up the 2017 survey and begin the 2018 survey. For the 2018 survey we will also be sampling some apiaries in July and August and finishing up the sampling in September and October.
Anyone interested in having one of their apiaries sampled should contact Blane White at the MDA.
